Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method and the only one approved by the FDA. It uses a tiny probe to deliver a small electrical current to the hair follicle, disrupting its growth. Through a series of treatments, this process permanently removes unwanted hair.

With over 30 years of experience in electrolysis, we tailor your treatment to help you achieve smooth, hair-free skin. At Beauty by Joulexa, we use Sterex Electrolysis equipment, a trusted and globally recognised brand, to ensure your treatment is safe and comfortable. A new Sterex needle is used at the start of each session, and all equipment is sterilised to prevent cross-contamination.

What are the benefits of electrolysis?

  • Permanent hair removal – The only FDA-approved method to permanently remove hair.
  • Suitable for all skin types and hair types – Electrolysis can be used on all hair types and skin tones, including darker skin tones and lighter hair that IPL and lasers cannot treat.
  • Safe and effective – Minimal downtime and no harsh chemicals
  • Cost-effective – Electrolysis is a long-term investment as it has permanent results
  • Best for small areas – Especially facial hair on lip, chin, jawline and unwanted hair around the eye region
  • No more ingrown hairs – Unlike shaving, which can often lead to ingrown hairs, electrolysis fully breaks down the hair follicles, leaving a smooth finish.
  • Versatility – Electrolysis is not just for facial hair; it can be used all over the body.

Who is suitable for electrolysis?

  • Effective for all skin types and hair colours
  • Effective for treating hormone-driven hair growth caused by PCOS or menopause.
  • Ingrown hairs resulting in irritation or bumps
  • Fine, white, or resistant hairs that are not responsive to laser treatments
  • Transgender clients looking for a permanent hair removal solution as part of their transition

How many electrolysis treatments will I need?

Multiple appointments are required, as the number of sessions for permanent hair removal varies from person to person. Treatment may continue for up to eighteen months.

The duration of treatment varies depending on factors such as the treated area and hair type. Additionally, hair grows in cycles that include growth, rest, and shedding phases. Since not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, multiple treatments are necessary to effectively remove hair.

What to expect during the treatment?

Electrolysis usually doesn’t cause much discomfort. You might feel a slight tingling during the treatment. You can return to your normal activities straight away after treatment.

Pre-Treatment Care Instructions

  • Stop waxing, threading, or tweezing at least two weeks before treatment. Electrolysis works best when hairs are in the right growth stage.
  • Drink plenty of water and keep your skin moisturised in the days leading up to your session. Hydrated skin is less sensitive and makes electrolysis more comfortable.
  • No facials, skin peels, or sunbeds at least a week before treatment. We want your skin in top condition for the best results!
  • Before your session, gently cleanse the treatment area and avoid wearing makeup, foundation, or sunscreen. This keeps your skin clean and ready for action.

Immediate Post-Treatment Care (First 24–48 Hours)

  • Keep it clean: Gently cleanse the treated area with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to remove sweat, oils, or bacteria. Pat dry with a clean towel—don’t rub!
  • Soothe with cold compresses: Apply a cold, damp cloth or ice pack (wrapped in a towel) for 10–15 minutes to reduce redness and swelling.
  • Moisturise lightly: Use a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturiser to hydrate without clogging pores.
  • Avoid touching: Don’t pick, scratch, or rub the treated area, as this can introduce bacteria or cause scarring.
  • Skip makeup and products: For at least 24 hours, avoid makeup, lotions, or harsh skincare products (e.g., retinoids, AHAs) on the treated area to prevent irritation.
  • Stay out of the sun: Avoid direct sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ if you must go outside.

Long-Term Aftercare for Healthy Skin

  • Hydrate daily: Keep your skin moisturised with a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic product to maintain its barrier and prevent dryness.
  • Protect with sunscreen: Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation on treated areas. Apply SPF 30+ daily.
  • Avoid heat and sweat: For at least a week, skip saunas, hot showers, or intense workouts that cause heavy sweating, as these can irritate the skin.
  • Follow your technician’s plan: Stick to the treatment schedule and aftercare advice provided to ensure consistent hair removal and skin health.
  • Watch for ingrown hairs: If you notice bumps, use a warm compress and consult your technician for safe removal techniques.
