How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser tattoo removal is a highly effective, safe method for fading unwanted tattoos. The lasers emit ultra-short pulses to break up ink particles through a photoacoustic effect, without damaging surrounding tissues. The laser energy breaks ink particles into smaller fragments, which the body’s natural immune processes (liver and kidneys) gradually eliminate. This natural clearance happens over several weeks, which is why you’ll continue to see the tattoo fading in the weeks after treatment. Several sessions are typically required, with gradual fading after each treatment and minimal risk of scarring.

What kind of laser machine is used for tattoo removal at Beauty by Joulexa?

At Beauty by Joulexa, we use a Q-switch Nd:YAG Laser device (model name: IRIS), manufactured in South Korea by Bluecore, one of the world’s major laser manufacturers.

This high-quality Medical Grade Laser uses dual wavelengths (1064 nm and 532 nm) to effectively target a wide range of ink colours, including stubborn black and coloured pigments. Operating at True 15 Hz/s pumping speed, this “gold standard” advanced laser provides highly efficient treatment of pigmented lesions by safely destroying pigments while minimising patient discomfort. This  results in a lower risk of scarring and quicker recovery times. Its sophisticated cooling system further enhances client comfort and safety.

What sets the IRIS apart is its incorporation of advanced technology such as ultra-precise pulse control and real-time energy monitoring, ensuring consistent delivery and optimal results for every session. The IRIS also utilises modern optical engineering to concentrate laser energy exactly where it’s needed, reducing collateral tissue damage and further accelerating healing.

Pre & Post Treatment Care

To ensure optimal healing and reduce the risk of complications after your laser tattoo removal, please follow these care instructions closely:

Pre-treatment Care Instructions2026-08-26T03:25:42+00:00
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks before treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen and protect the tattooed area with clothing or a broad-brim hat when outdoors.
  • Discontinue self-tanning products one week before treatment. Ensure all residual self-tanner is removed before your appointment.
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, or products with highly active ingredients on the treatment area for at least one week before the procedure.
  • Avoid photosensitising medications before treatment. Inform your laser professional of all oral medications you are taking, especially those that increase sun sensitivity.
  • Stay well-hydrated and avoid alcohol in the days before treatment to support skin healing.
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption can affect the skin’s healing process and increase the risk of complications during the treatment. It is recommended to avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24-48 hours prior to the session.
  • Notify your derma clinician if you have a history of cold sores, as antiviral medication may be recommended.
  • Arrive with clean skin. Shave the treatment area, except for facial areas, to ensure optimal results.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won’t rub against the treatment area. The treatment area will be sensitive for a couple of days, so avoid any irritation.
  • If you’re concerned about discomfort, apply numbing cream to the area 1 hour before your appointment. Apply a thick layer to the entire treatment area without rubbing it in. Cover with a dressing or cling film and secure it. Do not use numbing cream if you are allergic to Lignocaine or Prilocaine. If unsure or using for the first time, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a test patch.
Post-treatment Care Instructions2026-08-26T03:28:05+00:00
  1. What to Expect
  • Blisters, crusts, and scabs are normal and may develop 8–72 hours after treatment.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or disturb any blisters, scabs, or crusts. This is crucial to prevent infection and minimise the risk of scarring.
  • Blisters typically resolve within 4–6 days after treatment.
  1. Immediate Care
  • Apply a cool pack and/or soothing gel for comfort and to help reduce swelling. You may also use ice for 20 minutes every hour during the first 24 hours if swelling persists.
  • Keep the area dry and avoid getting it wet for the first 24 hours.
  1. Cleaning and Moisturising
  • After 24 hours, gently wash the area daily using mild, unscented soap and water—do not scrub.
  • Use a fragrance-free healing ointment such as Aquaphor or Vaseline three times a day for the first three days. Keep the area bandaged with a clean bandage each day. After 3 days, remove the bandage and allow the area to air out to promote healing and drying.
  • Avoid scented lotions, soaps, and creams containing AHAs until all redness and crusting have healed.
  1. Activity Restrictions
  • Avoid excessive scrubbing, shaving, and any trauma to the area.
  • Do not swim, take baths, or use saunas/hot tubs until all blisters and scabs are fully healed.
  1. Sun Protection
  • Avoid sun exposure to the treated area throughout the healing process.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen whenever the area is exposed to the sun for the entire treatment period and for 3 months after your final session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions are required for laser tattoo removal?2026-08-26T03:38:25+00:00

Laser tattoo removal happens in phases because ink is placed at different depths in the dermis. Each session targets the most accessible ink first; the deeper ink is treated in subsequent sessions. The immune system takes time to clear broken-down pigments. Giving skin time to heal between sessions helps recovery and lowers the risk of complications.

Most clients need between 6 and 12 sessions, depending on tattoo age, colour, location, ink density, and individual immune response.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?2026-08-26T03:38:30+00:00

During laser tattoo removal, a client can expect some discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a warm elastic band flicking against the skin. If you’re concerned about discomfort, apply numbing cream to the area 1 hour before your appointment.

How long does each laser removal session take?2026-08-26T03:38:34+00:00

A laser tattoo removal session typically lasts 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the tattoo’s size and complexity. Smaller or less detailed tattoos often require less than 10 minutes, while larger or more intricate designs may take 30-45 60 minutes.

Can I get my next tattoo removal treatment before 6 weeks?2026-08-26T03:38:38+00:00

Wait at least six to eight weeks between laser tattoo removal sessions. This gives your skin time to heal and allows your body to clear the broken-down ink. Scheduling sessions too close together can increase the risk of skin damage and reduce effectiveness, as your body may not have finished removing the ink. By waiting, each treatment targets faded ink, improving results and minimising unnecessary risk.

How effective is your laser machine, and what are the wavelengths?2026-08-26T03:38:42+00:00

The Iris by Bluecore laser machine is highly effective for tattoo removal, targeting a wide range of ink colours with minimal skin damage. It utilises dual wavelengths—532 nm and 1064 nm—to break down different pigment types. The 532 nm wavelength targets brighter ink colours such as red, orange, and yellow, while the 1064 nm wavelength is suitable for darker inks like black and dark blue.

Manufactured in South Korea by a top laser engineering company, Iris is an advanced smart laser device operating at a true 15Hz repetition rate. This technology delivers efficient treatment for pigmented lesions by quickly and accurately targeting unwanted pigment, reducing patient discomfort and improving outcomes.

Am I a good candidate for laser tattoo removal?2026-08-26T03:38:46+00:00

Most people can have laser tattoo removal, but a few important factors are usually assessed first.

  • Tattoo size and colour matter. Darker inks like black, blue, and green usually fade more easily, while lighter colours can be harder to remove. Laser removal is safe for all skin types, and your clinician will check your skin to choose the best method. Older tattoos often respond better to treatment than newer ones.
  • Health Conditions: You should be in good health and not have any medical conditions that could slow down healing. Some medications can affect recovery, so make sure to tell your clinician about any medicines you take.
  • Tattoo Location: Where your tattoo is located can also matter, since some areas of the body are more sensitive or harder to treat. A clinician will assess eligibility for laser tattoo removal and estimate the number of sessions required to achieve the desired outcome. This consultation is essential for developing a personalised treatment plan that optimises results.
